What is the difference between FTL and partial truckload?

Full truckload (FTL) means your freight occupies the entire trailer — typically 28 ft or more of deck space, or over 20,000 lbs. You pay for the whole truck regardless of how much space you use. Partial truckload (PTL) means your shipment uses only part of the trailer (roughly 8–27 ft), and the carrier fills remaining space with other freight. PTL rates are lower per mile but transit times are sometimes longer because the carrier may make additional stops.
